Example 1: the GPA of one semester
Five courses: 3-credit A, B+, A- and B, and a 1.5-credit lab with A+. Points 3 × 3.75 + 3 × 3.25 + 3 × 3.50 + 3 × 3.00 + 1.5 × 4.00 = 46.50. Total credits 13.5. GPA = 46.50 ÷ 13.5 = 3.44.

Marks to letter grade to grade point. The lower mark is included, the upper is not: 75 is an A, 74.9 is an A-.
| Marks | Letter grade | Grade point |
|---|---|---|
| 80–100 | A+ | 4.00 |
| 75–<80 | A | 3.75 |
| 70–<75 | A- | 3.50 |
| 65–<70 | B+ | 3.25 |
| 60–<65 | B | 3.00 |
| 55–<60 | B- | 2.75 |
| 50–<55 | C+ | 2.50 |
| 45–<50 | C | 2.25 |
| 40–<45 | D | 2.00 |
| 0–<40 | F | 0.00 |
Credits × grade point. An A in a 3-credit course gives 3 × 3.75 = 11.25.
Add the points of all courses in a semester and divide by their credits for the semester GPA. Use every semester together for the CGPA.
Rounded like a transcript, halves up: 3.745 becomes 3.75.
A course with no grade or marks yet is not counted.
Five courses: 3-credit A, B+, A- and B, and a 1.5-credit lab with A+. Points 3 × 3.75 + 3 × 3.25 + 3 × 3.50 + 3 × 3.00 + 1.5 × 4.00 = 46.50. Total credits 13.5. GPA = 46.50 ÷ 13.5 = 3.44.
Semester 1 has 15 credits and a GPA of 3.35. Semester 2 has 12 credits and a GPA of 3.75. CGPA = (50.25 + 45.00) ÷ 27 = 3.53. Averaging the two GPAs would give 3.55, which is wrong because the semesters have different credits.
CSE 201 first gets a C (2.25), then a B+ (3.25) as a retake next semester. Alongside, MAT 201 has an A and PHY 201 a B. With the best attempt counted the C drops out: CGPA 3.33. Counting every attempt gives 3.06.
You have a 3.20 CGPA over 60 credits, want 3.30, and will take 15 credits next semester. You need 3.30 × 75 = 247.5 points in total and have 3.20 × 60 = 192. The remaining 55.5 points over 15 credits means a GPA of at least 3.70 next semester, close to a straight A (3.75) in every course.
In the VarsityKotha app each semester is saved on your phone, you can set your own grading scale as well as the UGC one, and the target planner is built in. It also has your class routine, reminders and Campus Voice. Free.
Get it on Google PlayMultiply each course's credits by its grade point, add the results, and divide by the total credits. Do it with the courses of one semester for the semester GPA, or with all semesters for the CGPA. Averaging two semester GPAs gives a wrong CGPA when the semesters have different credits.
4.00, for 80 marks and above. Then A (3.75, from 75 up to 80), A- (3.50), B+ (3.25), B (3.00), B- (2.75), C+ (2.50), C (2.25), D (2.00) and F (0.00) below 40.
In Bangladesh the best attempt usually counts. The calculator lets you choose best attempt, latest attempt or every attempt. Retakes are matched by course code, so use the same code for the same course (capitals and spaces do not matter).
Yes. F is 0.00 points, but its credits still go into the total credits, so it lowers the CGPA. If you pass the retake, the best-attempt rule stops counting the F. Credits passed are shown separately, without the F.
Most universities follow this UGC 4.00 scale, but some use their own. Your university's grading sheet and registrar have the last word. The VarsityKotha app lets you set a custom scale; this web calculator uses the UGC scale only.
No. School and college public exams use a 5.00 GPA scale. This calculator is for the 4.00 university scale.
There is no single official formula for all universities, so we do not show a guess. The table above gives the marks range of each letter grade. For a formula, check your own university's rules.
No. The maths runs in your browser. For convenience your entries are kept in this browser's localStorage so you do not retype them next time. Nothing goes to our servers, and clearing browser data removes it.
VarsityKotha puts your routine, reminders, the CGPA calculator and a safe way to raise campus problems in one app.
